Mushroom Bokeh is a reduction print, where each color layer was carved out from a single block or two creating a limited edition series of 11 prints. The small details within the ferns were added by hand. Each print is numbered, titled, and signed on the front. Prints are shipped with a backing board and cellophane sleeve for protection.
This print began as an experimentation in hard and soft edges, opacity and transparency. After seeing how the camera lens created a bokeh effect (the little circles out of focus light makes in the background of many photos) behind my photo of two bright white mushrooms in the evening light, I wanted to see if I could create a similarly soft effect with a traditionally hard edged medium. I used different layers of transparent inking, opaque inking, and carved circles to create a fore-focused image with a more indistinct background. I love the way it came out with the bright white mushrooms and the contrast of loose shapes and hard-edged shapes.
